A phobia

One of the things I fear and hate most is SNAKES. Even writing this makes my skin creep, and I furtively lift my feet up from the carpet, although I know that these things do not live in London, and even if they did, they would be hibernating. Thank God. I cannot watch anything that has these creatures be it telly or movies or pictures because of my deep-seated loathing for them. Of course there is no logic or reason to my phobia, but it is there and it is real!!!

Once my family and I went to the Nairobi museum, and afterwards, some brave souls decided to go to the snake house. I and a younger sister waited outside enjoying our ice-cream, after a few minutes, we heard screams coming out from the snake house and one of the “brave” ones came running out, screaming and shaking – why? because she had been leaning on a wall and when she turned around she came face to face with a snake. Granted it was cased in a glass thingy but the fact that it was that close to her was just beyond fear.

Someone once told me about a type of snakes in Western Kenya that come to play with babies, while their mothers work in the gardens. She said that they are like nannies and will play them while the mother is busy, and when it is time for the mother go home, she will thank the snake for taking such good care of the baby, plead with it to give the baby back and promise to bring it back the following day. All I can say is HELP!!!

A while back an expert on reality TV was working with people to "cure" them of their fears. He challenged several to hold the things they feared (snakes, spiders, creepy crawlies etc) so that they could overcome their fear. Who me? Not for all the tea in China, India and Kenya combined would I allow myself to be in a room with snakes.

I am sure there are several experts who would be more than happy to tell me the reasons for my fear and what I ought to do to overcome this fear, but if it means being anywhere near them – FORGET IT. Let’s not reason it out, overcome it or analyse the fear. Let snakes stay where they belong – in holes in the ground and as far away from me as possible.

When I give thanks to the Almighty for His great works, I will thank Him because He is the Boss, but I will find a way of pointing out to Him that snakes are a very bad idea. Thank You God, anyway - some people like snakes, but me - I work very hard to avoid them.

For the first time since this blog was started, I am first here, and not last: Thank God.

Hi Auntie..
You would hate me coz I went to London zoo and was trying to wake the sleeping snakes and they were hissing at me. Oh, how brave I was cos I knew they were behind glass- Oh how scaredy-cat I am if I had to meet the creature face to face.

My 'pet' hate is spiders and cockroaches, oh and leeches. Note to God(I laugh coz I think the same as you about creation: There was surely no reason for you to create leeches, and although I have never come across one, I would cry and scream until I am hoarse. Just seeing them makes my skin crawl for hours.

So I cannot get you a snake-skin bag for xmas auntie?

It is times like this that make me feel as though I was bought and not born into the family - I actually like snakes. Of all the wild animals out there they are probably the most peaceful ones.

I know this view doesn't go down well with the rest of my family but that is the nature of phobias. As often as I wonder why you would fear snakes; am sure you spend the same amount of time wondering what a balloon ever did to me.

As an aside: I know of someone who has a phobia of rice!!

Auuwiii Guess! You actually were trying to wake the snakes up!

I think this phobia must run in the family although we do have some members, who shall remain nameless, who are scared of balloons, fireworks, birds na kadhalika:)

Guess: Yes: no snakeskin purse. Just the very thought makes my skin crawl. Why on earth were you teasing the snakes?

MJY: I did not want to let you know but....NO COMMENT. Sadly phobias are something most people did not understand. I wanted to make a rude comment about the person who fears rice - I'm not smirking honest.

Milo: Hi nephew hope you are fit. See you will have no problems fitting in.

Mshairi: Where did we go wrong with Guess?

Curious Servant: Always there when there is a call to arms. I will remember you.

Poi: You are so right about them things. I just do not understand them and why they exist. Am sure they or other creatures feel the same towards us. Have a great week too dear one.

Yes LifeMoments, but I will hold your coat while you kill them.

Yes Nick, I too believe they should not be here - but God made them for a reason, so thank You anyway.

Nyaks, I was thinking of you as I wrote this one - man I should quickly post something else so that nobody else comments on this thing and I do not have to respond to them.
